"BALLSTON SPA -- Ashlie Busone's tie-dyed heart is going international.
The Ballston Spa High School senior founded Hippies for Hope in Saratoga County two years ago. This summer, it is expanding into Africa, where Busone will teach language skills and agriculture at a girls school in Tanzania.
Busone, 17, has delivered thousands of tie-dyed T-shirts to hospitals and group homes across the Capital Region, the Northeast and beyond. She and other students dye nearly 100 shirts a week in her family's Ballston Lake garage, and sell them to the public for $10 each. Each shirt sold buys another for a hospitalized child or adult. Each shirt carries an inspirational message or quote, and Busone tries to comfort those she visits."
